I too had a bully. And after probably a week or so I fought back--very ineffectively, just comic flailing really.

And after that, she not only stopped bullying me, she tried to befriend me. We didn’t become friends, bc I was still afraid of her, but we were friendly acquaintances. What I learned is that yes, bullies test the waters. And certainly some bullies are irredeemable. But some are people who fear and despise apparent weakness, and project their own fear into others, and want above all to be seen rather than ignored. Knowing that has been very helpful in my life.

I have never felt the need to own a gun. I don't hunt, and I believe the statistics that show having a gun around the house "for protection" makes you, on the whole, less safe.

I have been rethinking that philosophy, of late, precisely because the bullies on the right have been itching for permission to start shooting people who aren't part of their fascist club. And because we came within a hair's breadth of that permission being formally and explicitly granted on January 6.

How far are we from Republican presidents and governors offering pre-emptive pardons to those who murder their political enemies? And, given the rightward tilt of law enforcement and military personnel in the US, who do we turn to for protection when they inevitably do?

Is it possible that gun ownership by liberals and progressives may be the equivalent of that smile that you gave to "Jake"?
