Thank you for raising the issue of context! Professor Timothy Snyder does too in his most recent essay:

« The auto industry, he says, is "the least of it."  If he is not elected, "it's going to be a bloodbath for the whole" and "it's going to be a bloodbath for the country."  He repeats that the auto industry is "the least of it."  So, yes, the words about cars are part of the context, in the sense that if you pay attention to them you know that he does not mean an automotive bloodbath.

The auto industry is "the least of it."  Trump is promising, as he says, a "bloodbath for the country."

Even in the narrow syntactical context chosen by his defenders, it is clear what Trump has said.  And more important are the physical context, the context of the speech as a whole, the historical context.

Trump is calling for a bloodbath in front of people who stood to honor bloodshed.  People who have just sung with coup criminals.  People whom he implicitly promises he will pardon if they carry out another insurrection.  And he is doing this in the fascist style of telling a big lie that confers martyrdom upon criminals who try to overthrow a democracy they associated with subhumans. »

He goes on to call trump « the bloodbath candidate »

I’ll say it again: It’s been nine years since Trump came down the escalator and there are STILL people who get paid six and seven figures to cover national politics who go to bed worrying that they haven’t given him enough of a chance to explain what he’s all about.

And they wake up the next morning terrified that today is the day he’ll pull the mask off and reveal that he’s actually a smart, well-read guy who digs deep into the data, consults with a wide variety of experts and spends a lot of time in deep contemplation before issuing a policy statement.

This is what keeps me awake at night, Mr. Moxon. Why, after the use of the word "bloodbath", didn't the president of the United States demand airtime on every network to assure the citizenry of this country that he would use every power at his disposal to try to ensure the safety of every American this election from the threat of fascist violence? Why does the current administration allow us to be threatened in this way? Do they have any idea of the health crisis this is causing? Mental health? Depression? Anxiety? Paranoia? High Blood Pressure? Road Rage? All on the rise, thanks to trump. It almost feels as though the utter despair and impotence of the Biden administration was the thing that was necessary to finally extinguish all hope and break our spirits for good, thereby preparing us to be led, exhausted, into slavery.
